Domestic violence is one of the greatest human rights challenges of our time, affecting millions of women and children around the world. Whilst it is widely accepted that growing up around domestic violence is a devastating experience for many children, worryingly little is know about the full extent of the problem. Our 2006 Stop Violence in the Home campaign aims to make a difference by raising awareness of the problem and the impact it has on children, and raising funds to help provide better services for those children.

To find out more, The Body Shop created a partnership with the United Nations. The result is the joint report, Behind Closed Doors - The Impact of Domestic Violence on Children, developed by UNICEF, The Body Shop and the United Nations Secretary-General's Study on Violence against Children.

Here are some of the findings:

• There is a significant risk of ever-increasing harm to the child's physical, emotional and social development - resulting in sleep problems, emotional distress, fear of being alone, and problems with educational development at school.

• Children who live with domestic violence are at risk of becoming victims of abuse themselves.

• Later in life these children are at a greater risk of substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, and criminal behaviour.

• While there is a strong likelihood that this will become a continuing cycle of violence for the next generation, many children grow up actively opposed to all forms of violence.
