Why we support this cause
Domestic violence happens everywhere. At least 1 in 3 women around
the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in
her lifetime. Usually, the abuser is a member of her own family or
someone known to her.
Stop Violence in the Home is The Body Shop International's
campaign guiding and supporting customers and employees to get
active against domestic violence. We want to tell the world about
this human rights scandal and work with governments to take
action.
Where it all began
In 1994 The Body Shop Canada launched a ground-breaking campaign to
highlight the extent of domestic violence after statistics from the
Canada Violence Against Women Survey revealed more than 50% of
women in Canada would experience at least one incident of violence
in their lifetime. In that first year of campaigning The Body Shop
Canada raised $155,000 for violence prevention and recovery
programmes and received the Grand Award from the United Nations for
effectively addressing an issue of vital concern to the UN.
The campaign inspired the global Stop Violence in the Home
campaign which was launched in 2003 consolidating a long-term
commitment to pursue real change around the world and building on
established long-term campaigns in Canada, the USA, West Malaysia
and the Phillippines. The emphasis of the Stop Violence in the
Home campaign is on creating a better future for victims of
domestic violence by raising awareness of the issue and generating
funds for helping to tackle it.
A truly Global Campaign
By 2006 the campaign had reached 47 markets across the world. In
2006 alone The Body Shop raised over £700, 000 worldwide for
organisations working to stop domestic violence. This brought the
overall fundraising total since we first began campaigning against
domestic violence in Canada in 1994 to over £2 million. These funds
are vital in the fight to stop domestic violence, but fundraising
is only half the story of what The Body Shop Stop Violence in
the Home campaign has achieved. Bold, innovative,
groundbreaking, even law changing, the achievements of employees
and customers in raising awareness and changing attitudes has been
truly remarkable.
Together we can make a difference. Thank you for your
support.
