Women in the Amazon Belt have always collected fallen nuts from the
wild-growing babassu palms. Until, that is, powerful landowners
restricted their access so they could graze cattle instead. The
women campaigned for years, often in the face of physical danger,
eventually winning the right to gather the nuts. As the women say,
the palms 'belong to the nation like water and air'. Through
